April 26, 2012 Literacy Roundtable Meeting update

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Literacy Roundtable held its Spring 2012 quarterly meeting on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at UNC Charlotte. This was a Roundtable business meeting to decide on a meeting schedule and leadership for the next year. The group decided to continue with quarterly face-to-face meetings. It also moved to create a leadership structure with two co-chairs and a communications coordinator. Sherilla Horton from the Family Enrichment Movement and Karen Bean of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library will serve as co-chairs.

Roundtable's Dec. 8 meeting at CPCC Cato Campus

The December quarterly meeting of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Literacy Roundtable will be held Thursday, Dec. 8 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) Cato Campus in room 271. The meeting will be chaired by Molly Bonnett, Volunteer Coordinator for CPCC.

The Roundtable will review the Fall Literacy Expo held on Nov. 15, 2011 and discuss plans for the Spring.

The newly formed Charlotte-Mecklenburg Literacy Roundtable will host a Literacy EXPO and Tutor Training Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Beatties Ford Road branch of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. “Share the Power of Reading!” will offer a forum for learning about local literacy agencies and resources and will connect volunteers with opportunities to help meet local literacy needs.

A wide variety of community organizations, schools, colleges and universities will share information about local literacy efforts and provide training for tutors who want to make a difference by

September Roundtable Meeting

The September 8, 2011 meeting of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Literacy Roundtable was held at the Plaza Midwood Public Library. Members of the Roundtable worked on plans for the Fall Literacy Expo the group is holding on Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Beatties Ford Road Library. It was decided that this event should focus primarily on tutor training for tutors working with K-12 students and tutors working with adults.

The next quarterly Charlotte Mecklenburg Literacy Roundtable meeting is Thursday, June 9  from 11 to 12:30 pm at UNC Charlotte. The meeting, which is in the College of Education Room 110, will focus on developing and using our website and other social media and planning for a tutor training event this fall. Join us! Center for Adolescent Literacies hosts teacher workshop

Americorp program could be cut

With discussions in Washington DC focused on ways to cut the federal budget, the Americorp program, part of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), has been placed on the "chopping block." President Obama's FY 2012 budget requests $1.26 billion for CNCS, a $109 million increase over current funding levels.

Literacy providers join forces

Literacy providers in Charlotte Mecklenburg have joined together to form the Charlotte Mecklenburg Literacy Roundtable. Our purpose is to foster communication among our programs and seek ways to collaborate to better serve the literacy needs in our community.
